Freedom!-Montpelier, Idaho-July 4th, 2012-10:30pm-f/10-1/8-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T2i
No edits were done to this image.
This image, and the next image were both entered into the Photographics Society contest at BYU-Idaho. The theme for the contest was, “Celebrating Freedom.” I chose to enter this contest because I wanted to learn how to shoot good pictures of fireworks, and how to edit them as well. Also, the 4th of July is my favorite holiday, so I just thought that I would have some fun with this!

Christmas on the 4th of July-Montpelier, Idaho-July 4th, 2012-10:30pm-f/10-1/4-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T2i
I named this image, “Christmas on the 4th of July,” because of the colors that were captured in it reminded me of Christmas. I increased the vibrancy and saturation to this photo, and then added more contrast to it as well. After that, I darkened the sky around the fireworks, making the fireworks stand out a little more.

Wooden Ladder-24×36-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.0-1/80-ISO 3200-Canon Rebel T3i
This picture was taken at the ghost town in Bannack, Montana at the Mill. I thought this was really interesting because of the lines that are in it, and how many there are in it, and how they’re almost all pointing different directions. I also really like the way the light hit both the ladders as I took the picture. In PhotoShop, I added a little more vibrancy and saturation to the picture. I also darkened it just a little because it came out a little too bright. After that, I sharpened the ladder and the steps that are in the foreground.

Blog 7: Night and Light

Blurred Lights-Rexburg, ID-11:30pm-f/5.6-2.0-ISO 160-Canon Rebel T3i
I went to Porter Park in order to take this picture, because that is a pretty busy part of town, with cars driving past it often. I didn’t have a tripod when I took this picture, so I simply used the actual Porter Park sign, put my camera on top of that, and took the picture when cars came by. I took quite a few of them but this one is my favorite because a delivery car drove by right when I took it so you can see the taillights of the car, as well as the sign that’s on top of the car. In PhotoShop all I did was add a tiny bit of vibrancy and saturation, and I sharpened the background just a little.

Light Sketching-Shooting Star-Rexburg, ID-June 3rd, 2012-f/11.0-5.0-ISO 100-Canon Rebel T3i
This picture was fun to do, but it was also very challenging for me as well. I actually took this picture in the bathroom of my apartment. I turned out all the lights, set the camera on a timer, extended the exposure, and when the camera would start counting down to take the picture, I jumped in front of it and drew the star in the air with a flashlight. In PhotoShop, I didn’t do much editing, because this is basically what it looked like when I took it. However, as I looked closer, I could see a little bit of the background so all I did was darken it just a little. Other than that no edits were made to this picture.

Light Painting-Rexburg, ID-June 3rd, 2012-f/9.0-15.0-ISO 100-Canon Rebel T3i
This is another picture that was a little challenging for me. For this picture I grabbed some plants, went into a dark room, and tried to capture a good image with them. I extended the exposure of the camera, and “painted,” these plants with a flashlight. I really tried to make the one in front stand out more, but still make it possible for the ones in the background to be seen, so I put the light on the one in the center for a longer amount of time, and then brushed over the ones in the background. In PhotoShop all I did was darken the background a little, and then sharpen the leaves on the plants.

Bee-St. Anthony, ID-June 2nd, 2012-f/5.6-1/3200-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T3i
This picture was taken in my friends front yard in St. Anthony, Idaho. I thought it was really cool how I was able to catch a picture of this bee, because it was flying everywhere. For this picture, I sharpened the bee and the flower, to help make it stand out more against the blurry background. I then added vibrancy and saturation, to add more color to the picture. Then I added the burned border, which I thought made it look more professional and appealing to look at.

Dandelion-St. Anthony, ID-June 2nd, 2012-f/5.6-1/4000-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T3i
This is a picture of a dandelion that I took right outside my friends house in St. Anthony, Idaho. There were a bunch of these all around, but this one turned out the best. In PhotoShop, all I did was add vibrance and saturation to the picture, and then I added a sprayed edge effect to help it look more interesting.

Lady Bug-Sugar City, ID-June 2nd, 2012-f/14.0-1/400-ISO 6400-Canon Rebel T3i
This was a ladybug that I saw as I was taking pictures of random things around Sugar City. I was walking by, and this little tiny ladybug caught my attention as I walked past this tree. In PhotoShop, I added a Flexible Vignette border, to help bring your attention to the ladybug. I then added vibrance and a little saturation to the picture. I then sharpened the ladybug a little.

For this Fine Art Template, I got my new running shoes, (which are amazing!), and a bright red floor mat, and used that as a background. I took the picture in a room that was pitch black, but turned up the exposure on my camera, and “painted” my shoes with light. I then edited it in PhotoShop by adding basic adjustments such as adding vibrance and saturation, and I also sharpened the image just a little bit as well.

Bannack HDR

Little Red Barn-May 24th, 2012-Bannack, Montana-f/5.0-1/1000-ISO 100
This is an HDR photo, which was taken right in the town of Bannack, where a couple of buildings stood right next to each other. I didn’t add any edits to this picture. All I did was combine the 3 pictures in Photomatix, which made it look like this. I really like the sky and the mountain in the background, and the color that it adds to the picture.

Kid Cowboy-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/5.6-1/1250-ISO 640-Canon Rebel T3i
This is another HDR photo, and it was also taken right in the town of Bannack. I didn’t add any edits to this picture either. After I inputted this picture into Photomatix, it came out looking a little more warmer. The picture looks a little brighter and more clearer, which, in my opinion, looks better.

Bannack Macro Abstract

Tool at the Mill-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.0-1/1600-ISO 3200-Canon Rebel T3i
This picture was taken at the mill, which isn’t too far away from the actual town of Bannack. I don’t exactly know what this was used for, but I thought that it was really interesting, so I took a picture of it. I also took a picture of one of the buildings, because I really liked the texture of the wood. I then blended the two together, and added more contrast to the picture, to make it look better. The wood texture is only used where the tool is in the picture, which I thought made it look really cool.

Bannack Reverse Shallow Depth

Tree leafs-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.5-1/320-ISO 100-Canon Rebel T3i
For the both of these pictures, all I did was first focus on the leaves in the foreground, and then focused on the building in the background. I then added more contrast, saturation, and vibrancy to add more green to these pictures, and also to make the buildings stand out more.

Bannack Action Blur and Freeze

Merry-Go-Round-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/14-1/30-ISO 100-Canon Rebel T3i
For this picture, I sharpened Heather a little, to make her stand out a little more compared to the blurred background. I also whitened her teeth just a little, and added more color and sharpened her eyes as well to make them stand out more.

Sharp Shooter-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.5-1/1250-ISO 400-Canon Rebel T3i
This picture was fun to take because this little kid was going to town with this gun. He was having so much fun with this aiming at things, and shooting at them. I added more contrast, saturation, and vibrancy to this picture, which added more color and made it look more interesting. I also sharpened the gun in the image, which, in my opinion, made it look better.

Bannack Portraits

Saloon Girl-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/5.6-1/40-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T3i
For this picture I turned up the vibrancy and the saturation. I also bumped up the contrast a little bit, just to make it look better. I then sharpened her eyes and lips, and part of her hair. Then, I removed some blemishes on her face and arms, to make her skin look a little smoother.

Cowboy-Bannack, Mon.-May 24th, 2012-f/5.6-1/250-ISO 800-Canon Rebel T3i
I didn’t make that many edits to this photo. All I did was use the special flash to even out the light on both sides of his face. I also turned up the vibrancy and saturation just a little, to make the colors stand out in this picture a little more.

Bannack Best

Ladder at the Mill-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.0-1/80-ISO 3200-Canon Rebel T3i
This is one of my favorite pictures that was taken on the trip. It was taken at the mill. For this picture, I sharpened the ladder that’s in the foreground. I also darkened the image a little from the original one, and added more contrast, saturation, and vibrancy, to make the image look better, and have the ladder in the foreground pop out more.

Hotel Meade-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/5.6-1/3200-ISO 3200-Canon Rebel T3i
I really like this picture as well. All I did to this picture, was make it black and white, and highlighted the words, “Hotel Meade,” on the front of the building, which made it stand out more. The thing that I like about this picture, is that there are quite a few things to look at, but the brightest thing in the picture is the title of the building, which draws your attention to it.

Grave-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.0-1/800-ISO 1600-Canon Rebel T3i
This is another picture that I thought was really cool to take. I took it at the graveyard that we went to as we were headed home. I didn’t add any edits to this photo either. All I did was make it sepia, which I thought was really cool, especially adding it to this picture, which made it look slightly more creepy.

Aubrey-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/5.6-1/500-ISO 1250-Canon Rebel T3i
For this picture, I bumped up the vibrancy and saturation. I also sharpened her eyes, and added more blue to them, which I thought was really cool, especially with the door in the background, which is a shade of blue as well. I also sharpened her hair and face, which added more to the picture, because it made her stand out a little more.

Padlock-Bannack, Montana-May 24th, 2012-f/4.5-1/40-ISO 160-Canon Rebel T3i
This padlock, was hanging on one of the doors to the buildings, which are normally locked. I saw this and didn’t think much of it, but just took the picture and didn’t think anything about it. Then as I was editing it, I realized that it could look a lot better than it did when it came out of the camera. For this picture, I sharpened the actual padlock, which I thought made it look better, and helps draw your attention to it. I also added vibrancy and saturation to it, which made the wood look darker and the picture as a whole look better.
